One of the oldest hotels in St Anton, the Schwarzer Adler dates back to the 1550s. It was built by the Knights of St. John on Arlbergstrasse with the stones from the “Arlen” ruins, as a Tyrolean inn for travellers and wagon drivers. In 1885, the hotel was bought by the Tschol family whose 5th generation still owns and manages the hotel today. Although each generation of the family has gradually upgraded, remodeled and modified the hotel to conform to the era, the history and tradition of the hotel has never been compromised. Today, the hotel has an authentic old world charm despite being equipped with modern facilities and amenities, including the best spa in St Anton. It is truly one of the iconic hotels in St. Anton.
The Schwazer Adler hotel has 72 rooms ranging from single rooms to suites. The rooms vary in size depending on the type of room but even the single rooms are quite ample in size. The rooms are a mix of different styles, most of which have now been renovated to a modern contemporary alpine style while a few are still remaining in the outdated traditional Austrian style with splashes of pastel colors. All the rooms are equipped with modern amenities such as flat screen TV with cable service and wi-fi access (which is reportedly a little slow in some rooms). Those rooms located on the higher floors on the mountain side get great views and are nice and quiet. Schwazer Adler also has some 2 bedroom apartments in a separate building just steps from the hotel. The apartments feature a small kitchenette and living area and area great for families looking for self-contained accommodation but with access to wonderful hotel facilities.
The hotel’s smart dining room (which has earned mentions in the Michelin Guide) serves a 5-course menu or vitality menu as part of the half-board rates. There’s also a traditional Stube a la carte restaurant in a 400 year old parlour or at the opposite end a more modern and informal “lifestyle” restaurant called Aquila. If you are a wine connoisseur the hotel holds wine tasting sessions in its wine cellar. The hotel has a lounge area equipped with a fireplace where you can relax or mingle with other guests.
The Schwazer Adler’s wellness area has undergone a massive transformation in recent years and is stunning. It features a lovely outdoor, mountain facing pool, a huge indoor pool as well as the usual aromatic saunas and steam baths, a variety of wellness baths, numerous beauty treatments, and relaxing massages. It has a gym and relaxation areas.
One of the best services of Schwarzer Adler is geared towards little guests making it great for families with small kids. It has a brand new, huge play-area where kids can enjoy their own activities with supervision provided free of charge for all guests (for kids aged from 3yrs). It’s available daily from 3pm, except Saturdays. (Childcare before 3pm is offered for a fee). They can jump around in the “Fun Box”, spend time playing video games, and interact with other kids at the table soccer. The kids can even have their meals in this area for an additional charge.
Schwarzer Adler offers Tyrolean warmth and hospitality, reflected in its impeccable and personalized service. It is a hotel that values families and makes certain that each one’s needs are met. No wonder, the hotel has been serving the community and guests from all over the world since the 1550s.
